Light Painting 2 - Painting object with torch light

DPS Assignment:  "Lighting: One Light (Artificial)"
There are so many ways to create/use artificial lighting and this round I am trying to paint an object in a dark by using a torch light.

Light painting photography - painting objects: Tutorial

How I did the following shots:
  • Settings: A table with black surface, a cheap torch light, tripod, remote control for the camera and the object(s)
  • Camera settings: Bulb mode, f-stop 22 or higher, ISO-100, Exp 0 or lower... I've even tried Exp -3 and it worked well
  • Execution: Start shooting a long exposure by triggering the camera with the remote control. Paint around the object and shine longer at the places you wish to focus on or be brighter.
  • Try a few shots, shine/wave torch light from different angles (top, bottom, side etc) and try different time. You will be surprised! :)
Note: Both pictures are SOOC
You can even see a little light painting (little swirl) on the top right of the bottle.
Maybe that's what how I was waving the torch light that way at that time
This is 13 seconds long exposure with more emphasis in front

DPS Assignment: Lighting: Natural Window Light

A new challenge:
  • to take a self portrait without able to look at the camera screen
  • to get a split lighting on my face
  • to only use natural lighting through the window
  • to test out different lighting at different time of the day and find the best lighting
  • to reflect light (to bounce light back onto my face) without a reflector
Here's the result and my submission:
All natural... natural light... no makeup

DPS Assignment: Composition - Get down

I've decided to shoot an indoor shot... boring I know.
Too many cute pets shots, outdoor gorgeous sceneries etc... I have no way to top them all.
I don't have very good lighting in my room, so... this is the best I can get.
Here is my "Don't cry over spilled milk" picture:
I've submitted this one although it is not extremely clear
A shallow DOF and my hand add a little dramatic feeling to the shot.

DPS Assignment: Composition: "Get Down" - Ideas - Part 4

More intriguing shots? Mmmmm.... *ponder*
Gosh! I am running out of ideas.
No discrimination here...
All I was trying to do is capturing the sign on the road that this old man happened to passed by with his stroller.

Thought this was funny... a small trolley is entangled with the big ones.

DPS Assignment: Composition: "Get Down" - Ideas - Part 3

What about macro/closeup?

DPS Assignment: Composition: "Get Down" - Ideas - Part 2

Let's see...  what about laying down and look upwards?
Here comes the from the ground view:

DPS Assignment: Composition: "Get Down" - Ideas - Part 1

Thought this assignment should be easy for me since I always squat down to get the lowest angles possible.
I was totally wrong.... This has been the biggest challenge of all.
Here comes part 1 - lay the camera on the road/ground:

DPS Assignment: Composition: Repetition and Patterns in Nature

Nature is very beautiful and there are lots of repetition and patterns if we look closer, i.e. grasses, leaves, tree rings, weed, spider webs, snow flakes... etc...
Having to choose between the tree rings and the pile of snow on my roof... I've decided to go with the snow although the shot was not my best (too difficult to shoot a roof from a weird angle and bad lighting).
Here's my submission for this week's DPS assignment:

DPS Assignment: Monochrome color

No black and white are allowed this week.
I choose red instead.
These are some cocktail picks neatly arranged on a pink scarf. :)
My favorite monochrome picture is the sunset picture (1st picture) I took at Patong beach this summer.

DPS Assignment: Fresh Start

2012 - Dare to try
Planking is really not my thing... I admit.
On the other hand, I have always wanted to have a floating banana shot but never got to do it.
So, for this week's assignment, I've decided to try out things that I've never done before.
Here you go... a floating me... hahahahahhha!
Silly but definitely a good fresh start for me.
Would really love to take this horizontally... unfortunately I love the woods background too much.

3rd place in DPS assignment

After many weeks of practices and submissions of my photos, I've finally earned my very first placing in Digital Photography School's weekly assignment. I guess hard work does pay off.

Although I came 3rd place, this is a very good encouragement for me to continue to learn more!
Click here to see my coffee submission (with no coffee in it).

Here's the DPS Forum's announcement for the coffee theme's winners. :)
